Palm Trees (Part 3) by Pastor Carl W. Mann, II

Psalm 92:12(KJV) “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.”

There had to be something about the “palm tree” that God wants us to ponder and present characteristics that can be found in the “palm tree.”

I discovered 7 interesting characteristics of “palm trees…”

  1. Palm trees support a great amount of weight.

palm tree 2Have you noticed that palm trees do not have a lot of “wasted” weight on them?  There are no limbs on the trunk of the tree to make its upward, or outward, growth more difficult.  Yet, when you inspect the top of the tree, you will find that the “mature” trees produce an abundant supply of large, heavy coconuts.  The weight of the coconuts does not cause the trees to sway more readily in the wind; but, rather, the trunk of the tree becomes stronger to bear the weight that “God ordained.”

The righteous do not carry “excess” spiritual weight either…

Hebrews 12:1 (KJV) “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,” (Emphasis Mine).

The righteous run to the Lord to remove their “worldly” burdens…

Matthew 11:28 (KJV) “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

The righteous “take on” the weight that God intends…

Mark 8:34 (KJV) “And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Emphasis Mine).

I discovered 7 interesting characteristics of “palm trees…”

  1. Palm trees protect the fruit from too much sun.

palm tree blowingThe large palm leaves seem to place themselves in position to protect its fruit from too much exposure to the sun and heat that would destroy the fruit.  The righteous protect the “fruit” of their testimony…

2 Corinthians 7:1 (KJV) “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

If you take notice of palm branches in a storm, or in preparation for an imminent storm, you will see that its branches seem to take on a “Posture of Praise!”  So, it is with the righteous…

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (KJV) “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you(Emphasis Mine).

Revelation 7:9-10 (KJV) “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb (Emphasis Mine).

I discovered 7 interesting characteristics of “palm trees…”

  1. Palm trees produce a very “unique” fruit.

Palm trees produce one of the most desired, unique fruit – Coconuts!  You might be thinking, “So what?!”  But, you need to know that God referenced these trees for a reason.  They produce fruit unlike any other tree produces.

The righteous are to produce “fruit” that is “unique…”

John 15:1-14 (KJV)“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you” (Emphasis Mine).

Galatians 5:18-24 (KJV) “But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts” (Emphasis Mine).

It is also interesting to note that the “fruit” of the “Palm Tree” continues to grow sweeter even though it is separated from the tree.  The “fruit” of the righteous should be the same…

Ephesians 5:1-17 (KJV)Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is” (Emphasis Mine).

I wonder, would God view me as “flourishing like the palm tree?”
