Question: Why is it so hard to understand God’s plan for our lives? If He had such a big plan (the universe, heaven, hell, etc.) why didn’t He create our brains smart enough to comprehend it all?
This question is very similar to that of Job’s…
Job 13:20-24 (KJV) “Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee. Withdraw thine hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid. Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me. How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin. Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy?” (Emphasis Added).
Job 13:20-24 (MSG) “Please, God, I have two requests; grant them so I’ll know I count with you: First, lay off the afflictions; the terror is too much for me. Second, address me directly so I can answer you, or let me speak and then you answer me. How many sins have been charged against me? Show me the list—how bad is it? Why do you stay hidden and silent? Why treat me like I’m your enemy?” (Emphasis Added).
Simply stated, Job was asking God why the things he was going through were happening, and he wanted an opportunity to explain himself to God. Primarily, though, Job wanted God to explain Himself. When God does respond to Job (Chapters 38-40), He lets Job know there was no way Job would understand God’s simplest explanation AND God doesn’t have to answer to any man and any time.
Why is it so hard to understand God’s plan? Because it’s God’s plan. You may be thinking I’m giving you “double speak” as a response – I am not.
Isaiah 55:8-9 (KJV) “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Emphasis Added).
Isaiah 55:8-9 (MSG) “I don’t think the way you think. The way you work isn’t the way I work.” GOD’s Decree. “For as the sky soars high above earth, so the way I work surpasses the way you work, and the way I think is beyond the way you think” (Emphasis Added).
Man was not created to understand God…
Job 11:7-8 (KJV) “Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?” (Emphasis Added).
Job 11:7-8 (MSG) “Do you think you can explain the mystery of God? Do you think you can diagram God Almighty? God is far higher than you can imagine, far deeper than you can comprehend,” (Emphasis Added).
The Psalmist said, Psalm 145:3 (KJV) “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable” (Emphasis Added).
Paul wrote, Romans 11:33-36 (KJV) “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen” (Emphasis Added).
Why is it so hard to understand God’s plan? Because it’s God’s plan AND man was not created to understand God OR His plan. We were created, however, to trust God and His plan.
Therefore, the wise man said, Proverbs 3:5-8(KJV) “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones” (Emphasis Added).
“If He had such a big plan (the universe, heaven, hell, etc.) why didn’t He create our brains smart enough to comprehend it all?” It is because we are not responsible for the “big plan” and God’s plan is NOT dependent upon any one or all of us put together! It is dependent upon Him.
It is important that we know that God has given us the abilities, spiritual gifts, and desires to fulfill the purpose for which we were created. Paul teaches us in 1 Corinthians 12:1-31 that God has divided the gifts of the Holy Spirit throughout Christ’s Body (the church) to fulfill the mission Christ left us – the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).
Peter states that Christ has given us everything we need to be successful in God’s plan…
2 Peter 1:3 (KJV) “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:” (Emphasis Added).
We were created for God’s pleasure…
Revelation 4:11 (KJV) “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Emphasis Added).
The meaning of “pleasure” is: a determination (properly the thing), that is, (actively) choice (specifically purpose, decree; abstractly volition) or (passively) inclination: —desire, pleasure, will.” Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible
Simply stated, we were created for God’s purpose to fulfill His desire, pleasure, and will.
What’s God’s desire, pleasure, and will for us? It’s simple…
- Love God.
- Love others.
- Do good works.
It’s enough to know this. It’s enough to seek God’s face. It’s enough to study His Word. It’s enough to be His will “for such a time as this.” It’s enough to please God.
